Chanca Piedra and Coronavirus

As many of you know, I’ve been working on a new series of books on the effective rainforest medicinal plants I’ve used for over 20 years as a health practitioner and product formulator to treat many types of diseases and conditions.  I wanted to share with you some vital information on one of these remarkable plants I’ve long used for viruses in light of the current events about viral concerns.

In fact, I’m working on the medicinal plant guide book for this plant right now, but it won’t be available for at least a month. The plant is called Chanca Piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) and it’s currently available as an herbal supplement under various labels in the marketplace.

I’ve used chanca piedra for many years as an effective herbal antiviral. It’s been the subject of clinical research in humans to treat hepatitis B and C. It’s also been confirmed to be effective against several herpes viruses (including the chicken pox virus in children), HIV, influenza, dengue, and others.  It works by inhibiting enzymes and other substances that viruses need to divide and multiply (transcriptase and protease), while also providing a direct toxic effect to some viruses (as well as bacteria). Researchers have confirmed the presence of at least 8 natural plant chemicals in the plant with antiviral actions.  It has not been scientifically tested against this current coronavirus, however I used it effectively with several clients (including my own granddaughter) when the country was fighting the H1N1 swine flu virus years ago.

In addition to being a good antiviral, significant new research on chanca piedra confirms it is an effective immune modulator.  It significantly increases the production and activation of immune cells responsible for fighting infections, while lowering the production of immune cells that cause inflammation.  This has also been confirmed in human research.  In human trials, adults and children with pneumonia, tuberculosis, hepatitis, chicken pox, and Hanson's disease (leprosy) mounted a much stronger immune response to fight these infections which sped healing and viral/bacterial clearance.  It was also noted that immune cells responsible for immunity were also increased, and those taking chanca piedra for their infections had no relapses or secondary infections and had higher levels of antigens (cells responsible for immunity). The small trial on leprosy patients led researchers to surmise that it's strong and immediate immunity response might be helpful as a preventative/anti-infection remedy to protect caregivers of this devastating disease.

In the people with pneumonia, asthma, and tuberculosis that were studied, a significant reduction in lung inflammation was also noted with significantly less pro-inflammatory immune cells causing lung cell stress, damage and cell death. Chanca piedra’s many strong antioxidant plant chemicals were probably one reason for this noted effect.  However, other research has been published on chanca piedra’s effective anti-inflammatory actions delivered by other novel anti-inflammatory chemicals in the plant.

I don't know if chanca piedra can kill this particular coronavirus outright like it can other viruses. That it boosts the immune system to fight both bacterial and viral infections naturally, as well as protects the lungs from inflammation and cell damage bacteria and virus causes in the lungs was enough for me to stock up on chanca piedra to protect myself and family, just in case, during these trying times.

If you want to get chanca piedra to have on hand, just in case, look for a supplement that uses chanca piedra that was harvested (preferably wild-harvested) in Peru or Brazil. Buy a whole-herb in bulk, capsules, or tablets and avoid the dry or liquid extracts that used alcohol to prepare them.  The active ingredients in chanca piedra are water soluble and don't much like alcohol.  Also there are other species of Phyllanthus plants being sold as “chanca piedra” harvested in China, India and Southeast Asia that are not as effective and don’t contain as many natural plant compounds as the South American Phyllanthus niruri species does (lots of research confirms this).  Personally, I purchase chanca piedra from Rainforest Pharmacy (rainpharm.com) since they are wild-harvesting it from Peruvian rainforest. You can also get their product from Amazon.com.

I’ve just uploaded all the new research on Chanca Piedra in my Tropical Plant Database at http://rain-tree.com/chanca.htm  so you can see all the new research conducted on this effective rainforest plant with many active chemicals and many medicinal uses.  Hopefully, the new rainforest medicinal plant guide book on chanca piedra that updates all the information shown in the plant database will be available very soon. But effective dosage information for the plant is already shown in the database file. As soon as the new chanca piedra book is available, it will be announced on this page:  http://rain-tree.com/books.htm

Stay well and take care,

Leslie Taylor

    Buena suerte!

    1. Hi Lo,
Thanks so much! The best source of rainforest medicinal seeds online is Tropilab. You can see their list of seeds available here: https://tropilab.com/seedlist.html I don't have any other contacts these days to obtain other seeds of medicinal plants.

      Best wishes,
      Leslie

    1. Hi Cesar,
Thanks! I hope you and your family are well... please send them my regards! The chanca piedra book should be available at the end of next week. I'm writing the book on graviola now and it is amazing how much new research has been done!

Happy Easter to you and yours,
      Leslie

  6. My friend, "The Warrior", it's so nice to see you did not "disappear". I do miss your LONG extraordinary detailed insightful responses to my many questions in the past. My interests were in natural compound extraction methods. My time goes back to when L.Y. was your office manager. We shared the same last name. Strange coincidence.

    1. You could design a "nonmedical" panacea such as Chaywanprash, but of Amazonian or rainforest nature. Being it had no central focus, it could not be considered as promoting as a drug.
You could even bake it in cookies.

    2. What of Chenopodium Ambrosioides? Has it no value in these current times? I've been impressed with what I've seen. It has a Caribbean and Mexican following. The seed oil is warned with caution though. Its fresh leaves make a very "healthy" vegetable. I've known those who have done quite exceptionally well stewing it in stews with meat.

This is quite short because I just zapped about four pages into oblivion ( I won't even cry, I'm a big boy).

    I'll be back

    1. Hi M.E.Y.,
I remember you! Hope you are doing well. Since I'm writing these days, I'm not formulating rainforest products anymore. But it's a good idea. I think a rainforest antioxidant formula would be great since it could be a panacea to aid in preventing and treating many chronic diseases. Rainforest plants are full of highly effective natural antioxidant compounds. Chanca piedra has 70 of them and would definitely be included!

      Take care and stay well,
      Leslie

  7. Dear Dr Leslie,
Greetings from India. Have you heard about an ancient medical system from India called Siddha Vaidya?
Hope that you would explore further.
    Warm regards,

    1. Hi Rajkumar,
Yes, I'm aware of the Siddha medical system, but really haven't had the time to study it fully. The mysticism, spirituality, and lifestyles changes used in Siddha are similar to the shamanic practices I've studied well in South America and the Amazon.

My focus however, has long been trying to scientifically verify the pharmacological actions of rainforest plants so they'll be valid in herbal medicine practices and integrative medicine practices in major markets like the US and the EU. Rainforest plants are FULL of active and beneficial plant chemicals and compounds that provide a myriad of important health benefits. For them to be widely accepted, and therefore widely used by all, I've been sticking to the research conducted on these plants and their active chemicals for validation.

It's not that shamanic and Siddha practices aren't valid, it's just that they're too hard to convey and even harder to scientifically validate.

      Best wishes,
      Leslie

  8. Hello Leslie, I have used Chanca Piedra in 2018 to help me with a kidney stone after the 2nd day of taking it 2 pills a day, I was able to pass an 8mm calcium oxalate stone without any pain, after trying to pass it for several months. This is trully a miracle herb!!!! .... Now my question is, Does Chanca piedra help clear up uti and kidney infection???? Thank you in advance.... Jessie

    1. Great news! I agree, chanca works better for kidney stones than anything I've see by far. It may help with UTIs because it does have some antimicrobial actions, however I've always relied on another formula I created specifically for UTIs called Amazon Urinary Support. You can find more info on the formula, how to prepare it, and links to possible purchasing sources at https://rain-tree.com/amazon-urinary-support.htm
It has other herbs with much stronger antibacterial and anticandidal action along with chanca piedra. Since reoccurring UTIs put you at a higher risk for developing more stones in the future, it's best to be more aggressive and clear up the UTI quickly.

      Best,
      Leslie

  9. Hi Leslie,

Your website is a wonderful resource on the science behind medicinal plants. I am a freelance science writer who has been working for the past 2 months on a major article about the science behind plant-based medicines that are available to be tried against covid-19. The media absolutely refuses to publish this, but I am intent on its reaching a large audience, which I have a plan for. In the article I profile both pau d’arco and chanca piedra. Because of your perspective, I think you would be a great person to talk with. If you are available, I can be reached at apgsciwr1@outlook.com.

    Thank you!
